타 구두점들 예를 들면, 마침표, 쉼표, 느낌표, 물음표, 따옴표 등등의 쓰임은 잘 알고 있으리라 믿고 개념이 덜한 콜론과 세미콜론의 사용을 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.

Colon의 사용목적은 크게 2가지 입니다.

1. 추가적인 설명을 제공할 경우
  예) He had many reasons for joining the club: to get in shape, to make new friends,
        to lose some weight, and to get out of the house.
        She gave notice for the following reasons: bad pay, horrible hours,
        poor relations with colleagues, and her boss.

2. 직접적인 인용구 사용시(쉼표로 대신가능)
  예) He announced to his friends: "I'm getting married!"
        She cried out: "I never want to see you again!"

Semicolon의 사용목적도 크게 2가지입니다.

1. 각각의 문구를 나열할 경우인데, 비슷한 내용을 나열 할 때 사용
    예) He loves studying; He can't get enough of school.
        What an incredible situation; it must make you nervous.

2. 동일한 문장형식으로 나열식 문장으로 만들 경우, 이건 예를 보심 바로 이해...
    예)I took a holiday and played golf, which I love; read a lot, which I needed to do
        ; and slept late; which I hadn't done for quite a while.
        They plan to study German, for their travels; chemistry, for their work;
        and literature, for their own enjoyment.
