(CNN) – A young girl in Indonesia died of highly pathogenic bird flue last month, brining the country’s total number of confirmed H5N1 human cases to 30, the World Health
Organization announced Tuesday.
Of those cases, 23 have been fatal, including the 20-month-old. She developed a fever
and cough on March 17, was hospitalized March 22 and died the next day,
the WHO said.
Several chickens near her home in Kapuk, West Jakarta, died from the highly
pathogenic form of bird flue about a week before she started to develop symptoms.
The girl’s relatives and neighbors are being tested for bird flu, and preliminary results
are negative, although they are still under observation.
The H5N1 virus has infected humans in nine countries across Asia and Africa.
The WHO has confirmed 191 human cases worldwide; of those, 108 died.
The virus has spread to birds in the small West African nation of Burkina Faso,
the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) confirmed Tuesday.
The outbreak began on March 1 at a camp in Gampela, about 10 miles east of the
capital Ouagadougou, among some 123 helmeted guinea fowl who died,
the OIE reported.
Guinea fowl – ground-dwelling, pheasant-like birds native to sub-Saharan Africa
– are often domesticated and eaten by humans.
Local authorities have quarantined the area and plan to vaccinate or cull poultry
on nearby farms.
